Oh Helen, you won the tea pot! I hope you’ll enjoy every cup. Toast us with some herbal brew, will you?
If you enjoy brewing your own herbal teas from handfuls of colorful, fragrant dried herbs, then you already know a tea ball isn’t always the most practical way to brew. Especially if you use herbs for medicinal purposes; then you understand that oftentimes several mugs of the brew are the best way to combat things like cold and flu symptoms. Or perhaps you’d rather prepare a pot of your favorite German chamomile or lemon balm to simply sit back and relax with a friend. Whichever your preferred use of herbal teas, it’s always important to have a good teapot. For me the ability to brew several cups at one time has been my most common way to go since the family (even the 2 1/2-year-old starts asking for a cup the moment they hear the herb jars opening. I’ve been trying BODUM’s new CREMA Tea Maker lately, and this sleek 34-ounce teapot is a dream for the herbal tea brewing enthusiast.
For starters, we’re talking about an ultra-light borosilicate glass pot which not only lets you easily see how the tea is progressing, but it’s also heat resistant; and of course glass doesn’t taint the flavor or alter the properties of the herb. Inside is a well-constructed stainless steel strainer, plenty of room for even larger, more complicated herbal preparations. Since the strainer is up away from the bottom of the pot, the water has a chance to rise to the top, mix with the herbs, then drop to the bottom producing what’s called “displacement”. Many herbalists prefer this way of preparation. After the tea has steeped for the desired time, the plunger can be pushed down to stop the brewing process. No need to remove the strainer and disturb the tea – it’s ready to pour and enjoy.
Other features I really appreciate in the CREMA are the pot’s ability to retain heat for a prolonged time (1 – 2 hours in my experience) and its ability to keep heat off the counter. The bottom is protected from passing heat on, so you can safely place the pot on any surface without worries. Of course the attractive stainless steel design doesn’t hurt either. This is definitely one of those times where design and function coexist wonderfully.
