Today is a special post from a new friend of mine, Marilyn Cutler. She tells her miraculous experience with doTERRA Essential Oils. I thank her for being so candid with us; it’s a story well worth reading.

I decided today to share how I got introduced to doTERRA essential oils.  I recently had a baby.

In February, to be exact.  A beautiful baby boy.

See?  He’s pretty durned cute.

I was nursing one day and noticed a lump in my right breast.  It was pretty large and at first I dismissed it as a clogged milk duct.  However, it didn’t hurt.  I knew once that realization kicked in that something was wrong but…I was in denial and just pushed that worry aside.  I called the DR and she scheduled me to come in to the office 3 hours later.  Um, she usually has a 6 week wait.  That’s when I knew for sure there was a concern.  That appointment was the first time the word cancer was thrown around and she scheduled me for an ultrasound 4 days later…the soonest possible appointment.

So for 4 days my husband and I did a LOT of research.  We knew that if there was blood flow to the tumor…then it was cancer.  If there was no blood flow…it was just a growth.  Finally the day arrived.  We went in.  They prepped me for the ultrasound and the tech sat on down.  She was very friendly and just chatted with me…until she saw the lump on the screen.  Then chatter stopped.  After a few minutes she excused herself to get the DR.  The Radiologist came in and quietly asked to see blood flow.  As soon as they said that…I knew something was terribly wrong.

The day before my 29th birthday I went in for a biopsy.  The radiologist mentioned that there was a possibility it could be something called Granulomatous Mastitis but that she had only seen it 3 times in her 25 years of practice.  I spent a quiet birthday at home with my family and the day after I got the news that it was in fact Granulomatous Mastitis.

So thankfully it wasn’t cancer but…this disease is nasty.  These growths appear and then get bigger and eventually explode.  They can actually explode through the skin.  And because it is so rare, there is no set treatment plan.  The most widely used treatment is immunosuppressant steroids…not good for a young mom.  They also have a very high reoccurrence rate.  There was no way I was going to do that.  The next option was lumpectomy…again, very high reoccurrence rate and not good for a young mom.  Some women elected for mastectomies to ensure that it would be gone completely.  Thank you but I don’t particularly want to cut off body parts unless 100% necessary.

So I called my friend who was involved with doTERRA and told her I would be her test case.  She brought me over some Frankincense.  I would rub it on topically and in 4 weeks the lump had shrunk by 50% and in 2 months in was 100% gone with no indication it had ever been there in the first place.  This was a complete miracle for me.  Women with this disease live in constant pain from surgeries, burst tumors, and sickness due to the immune suppressing therapies.  They have to watch what they do in case somehow the disease gets activated again.  Using these amazing oils…I have not had to worry about anything.  I live a totally normal life and am not afraid of it coming back at all.

Just as fascinating to me as using herbs and plants for medicinal purposes is using essential oils in much the same way.  Learning the proper ways to use these oils can be very rewarding, but where to start?  When it comes to learning something new or honing knowledge you’ve already collected, nothing is better than a nice fat book filled with pages to pour yourself into.  Connie and Alan Higley’s 11th edition of the Reference Guide for Essential Oils gives the natural remedy lover over 500 pages of well-organized information on the uses and how-to’s of essential oils.

The first part of the Reference Guide for Essential Oils gives a fantastic look into the applications of essential oils–where to apply them, how to use them, etc.  The second section is my favorite, listing each oil one at a time, giving you folklore, historical uses, what parts of the body the oil is beneficial for, and much more.  While about 3/4 of the book covers information on Young Living Essential Oils blends, supplements, and personal care products which I haven’t used before, I still find the book extremely useful for researching oils; I’ve had my nose in it for days.  Of course, if you use Young Living products, you’ll have found the perfect resource for learning more.

Author Connie Higley is offering a special discount to dkMommy Spot readers: 10% off when you order online with coupon code:  MOMMYSPOT.  This offer is only good through November 15, 2008, so if you’re interested in getting to know essential oils a little more personally, this is a great way to go!

Sweet Orange is a warm and sunny essential oil that comes from cold-pressing the peel of the sweet orange.  It’s known for its uplifting scent and is often used in perfume making.  This is a safe oil for children when used for its vapor; it induces a sense of well-being, lifts nervous tension and stress, and is a great aid for helping children sleep.  It’s used by aromatherapists as an antidepressant, an antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, sedative, and antiseptic.

The antiseptic properties make it handy for housecleaning.  I love to use Sweet Orange Oil in my homemade cleaning supplies.  Since vinegar and water in a spray bottle is my favorite all-purpose cleaner, I usually add several drops to a bottle of the mixture to increase cleaning power and to cut the vinegar smell.  Sweet Orange cuts through the grease quite well and adds an extra kick to vinegar’s already dirt-whopping power.

One simple warning with Sweet Orange:  it’s not to be used topically if you are going to be exposed to sunlight.  If you have a product containing the oil, be sure to stay out of direct sun, as it increases sensitivity to light and you may just find yourself in need of some natural sunburn relief!

One of the most powerful and versatile natural remedies we use around our house is oregano oil.  Its health benefits are numerous, and I’ll cover several over time.  Today I’ll tell you about one way I’ve personally experienced this essential oil’s power:  Ridding the body of food poisoning and stomach bugs.

Oregano oil is highly antiseptic.  In fact, it is probably the most powerful plant-derived antiseptic known.  This makes it a whiz at food poisoning and stomach bugs.  Several years ago I called in sick at work on my birthday.  Every boss’ suspicion, I know!  But I had a nasty stomach virus.  I couldn’t keep any food down, so there went my evening plans for a date with my husband to a nice restaurant.  By afternoon I was really miserable.  My husband called me from work and told me to try the oregano oil.  He’d been doing a lot of reading up on it and thought it might help.  I took 3 or 4 drops of oregano oil in a gel cap.  By the time he came home from work, I was up and around, feeling completely normal!  We went out to dinner where I actually had steak and dessert!  No problems.

We’ve experienced help from oregano oil many times in our family, every time with drastic results.  We never leave the country without it, as it’s staved off food poisoning, stomach bugs, intestinal issues, and numerous other health issues.  It’s certainly a wonder!

If you’re going to try oregano, my advice is to buy the best quality you can afford.  This doesn’t mean it has to be all fancy and specially cultivated, but you should know where the oil comes from.  As far as essential oils go, it does tend to be pricey but it’s absolutely worth having some around.  And since you need such a small amount (3 – 4 drops placed in an empty gel cap) one little bottle can last you a long time.  If you find you’re sensitive to it or it burns your stomach, try eating some bread or taking it with a meal.  I would suggest never taking it on an empty stomach unless you’ve been having a hard time keeping food down.  Some people put a few drops right in a glass of water, but it can give the mouth a burning sensation I’ve never particularly enjoyed.  Although if you’ve got a really sore throat, this will knock it out in no time if used as a gargle!

Keep a lookout for upcoming oregano oil posts.  There’s so much to say about this wonder oil!  It’s truly a medicine cabinet in a bottle.

There are a great many uses for peppermint essential oil.  If you’ve ever had the opportunity to smell it, you know it smells like the yummiest of candy canes, and that it perks you up with just one whiff.  But there’s more to this amazing oil than just a burst of Christmas memories.  I’ll only cover a couple of uses here today, but I’m sure we’ll revisit it again in the future.

I think my favorite use for peppermint essential oil is as a headache or migraine remedy.  Peppermint oil has just as much headache-whacking power than 1,000 milligrams of acetaminophen!***  That means you get natural headache relief just as potent as popping a couple of 500-milligram Tylenols, but without any long-term side effects or buildup of tolerance levels.  And Tylenol doesn’t ease tension and relax your muscles like a good whiff of peppermint does.

To use it is simple:  Just blend about 3 – 6 drops of good peppermint essential oil with a tablespoon of a carrier oil such as jojoba or almond oil.  (If you’ve just got olive oil in the house, that’ll do it too.)  Blend it really well, store it in a little bottle, and apply a drop or two to your temples.  I often experience the alleviation of even severe headaches in about a minute or two.  I also like to put a drop or two of the oil into my palm, rub my palms together, and inhale the fragrance.  It’s a great stress reliever and it opens the breathing passages.

For morning sickness or motion sickness, inhaling drops from your palm works well too.  Just using a drop of straight peppermint oil is fine, but make sure to keep it from your eyes because it’s potent.  You can also blend a little peppermint oil with lemon oil and ginger oil for a soothing blend to relieve the queasiness as well.
