Who would have ever thought recycling could get this cute, and useful too? Doy Bags creates shopping totes, bags and more, all out of juice packs. Since the juice packs are not able to be recycled and can only be incinerated or added to our ever-increasing landfills, Doy found a much better approach: Save the non-biodegradable packs and build a 500-woman cooperative in the Philippines committed to making attractive and useful items. The women make a fair income and are able to support their families, the landfills are minus the trash, and those of us who purchase from Doy Bags have unique and useful items.
I have myself a very colorful Doy Bag for shopping like the one pictured above. It’s a durable 12″w x 12.5″H tote made of Drysdale mixed fruit juice packs, and I love it! It’s been great for the beach, and since it’s so strong, I can really pack it full. My toddler loves pointing to the colorful fruit, and he competes with me over who can carry it next. It’s nice to know owning one means keeping the juice packs out of the landfills, too. And since the Doy Bags cooperative has been such a big part of teaching their community to recycle, I have lots of reasons to feel good about the bag.
Interestingly, because of this project and the unique reuse of the juice packs, it’s not uncommon to spot a Philippino enjoying his or her juice upside-down! By turning the packs upside-down
and piercing them from the bottom, the packs are more easily used and are more sturdy since the little straw hole at the top hasn’t been pierced. Who knows, perhaps the trend can spread here as well! I think we could learn something about recycling our “unrecyclables” from Doy Bags.
