When you shop for a printer, things like performance, features, and versatility are probably top of the list. And while I’ll cover those important features in my review of the new Epson Artisan 810 All-in-One Printer, there’s another area most of us probably completely overlook when searching for a new printer or other electronic device. I’m talking the eco-friendly factor. Wondering how an electronic could possibly have any eco-friendly features at all? Yes, it’s true – as of yet most electronics aren’t exactly green, but some companies are starting to try and find a better way to produce what we all rely so heavily upon in our modern society. I reviewed an Epson Artisan 700 last year, and because I see Epson making some great steps towards creating more eco-friendly products, I was happy to see what this year’s Artisan 810 had going for it.
Setup: Setup was very simple with the Artisan 810. It took me about 30 minutes to get the unit from the box to printing photographs. The instructions were clear and precise; for me this is vital because I really don’t like setting up new electronic devices most of the time.
Features: One of the coolest things about the Artisan series is that they’re able to go Wi-Fi. That means with my limited space, I can actually have my printer in the basement when my computers are upstairs. And since the 810 is also a fax, a scanner, a photo and document printer with a built-in duplexer that automatically prints on both sides of the paper, a copier, even a mobile device charger, I only need this one unit to be the workhorse of my office. I also really enjoy the 7.8″ Touch Panel with the 3.5″ LCD screen. The whole panel tilts up so you can easily view what you’re working on. Since you can operate the printer and view and edit your photos directly on the printer (no computer needed with this one), the full-color LCD screen is great to work with.
Performance: As with the Artisan 700, the photos are amazingly crisp and clear. I tried printing out some 4 x 6′s of my son and husband, and the photo was done in literally seconds. The results are photos that Epson claims won’t lose color for upwards of 200 years if kept in a photo album. (Couldn’t test that one, so we’ll have to take their word for it there.) I also printed my business cards which are on a textured paper, and they’re more beautiful than anything I’ve ever paid to have professionally printed. I produced several sheets of labels for products for The Giving Essence, and they were all printed quickly and with a surprisingly low level of noise. I’m all for quiet – it’s noisy enough around here. Oh, and document printing? Also very professional looking, even when in full color.
Greenness: So what’s the deal with the green factor on the Epson Artisan 810? For starters, the duplexer. This model has one built right in, and since it automatically prints on both sides of the paper, I can use about 1/2 the amount of paper I’d normally need, saving me in paper costs and waste. Of equal importance to me is that it’s Energy Star qualified and RoHS compliant. And the estimated power consumption for an entire year of usage with the Artisan is less than $2! That blows me away. But I think the best green feature of the entire Artisan series is that they’re designed to be recycled. That means when you’re ready to retire your Artisan and get a new one, you don’t have to worry about adding to a landfill. Don’t know where to recycle yours? Epson won’t leave you hanging there either. They have a thorough Product Recycling site that will walk you through the steps to sending your old printers, used ink cartridges etc. back to Epson to be recycled. They’ve been running this voluntary take back program since 2002. If your Epson product is still working, you can even opt to donate it. Their program is rather extensive and reaches out globally; definitely worth looking into next time you buy an electronic product.
As you can tell, I’m pretty impressed not only with the Artisan 810 All-in-One, but with Epson in general. Perhaps printers will never be made of bamboo and recycled water bottles. But while we wait, Epson gives us something to ease the greener side of everyone’s conscience.

I’d love the digital scrapbooking & photo editing instructional software, but only if I won this contest. (I don’t currently own a printer of any kind, so the software wouldn’t do much good without a printer, lol)
I have a 3 month old daughter (our 1st) & when we found out I was pregnant, hubby & I wanted to (secretly) scrapbook every year of her life up till her high school graduation, at which time we’d give her all of the scrapbooks. But due to scrapping being such a pricey hobby & hubby taking a huge paycut with his new job & us losing our home we don’t have the money for any kind of extras, much less scrapbooking. If I won the printer I could learn to do digital scrap booking which is alot cheaper & we could still have those cherished memories of our little girl.
