Ever see that Green America Seal of Approval symbol to the left? Perhaps it was on one of your favorite green products. Maybe you wondered if it meant anything special to you as a consumer. It actually means good things to consumers, the environment, and the economy. As we know, the economy could use some good things!
Green America (Co-op America until this January of 2009) was founded in 1982. They’re a not-for-profit organization dedicated to a number of green and socially responsible practices. Here’s what they tell us:
We focus on economic strategies—economic action to solve social and environmental problems. We mobilize people in their economic roles—as consumers, investors, workers, business leaders. We empower people to take personal and collective action We work on issues of social justice and environmental responsibility. We see these issues as completely linked in the quest for a sustainable world. It’s what we mean when we say “green.” We work to stop abusive practices and to create healthy, just and sustainable practices.
Businesses carrying the logo you see here need to meet certain requirements:
Focus on using business as a tool for positive social change. Are “values-driven,” as well as profit-driven. Are socially and environmentally responsible in the way they source, manufacture, and market their products and run their offices and factories. Are committed to and employ extraordinary and innovative practices that benefit: 1) workers, 2) communities, 3) customers, and 4) the environment.
So next time you’re looking for something to buy or someone to do business with, consider getting to know some of the businesses behind the friendly little Green America symbol. You may end up getting even more green goodness than you bargained for.
