Don't know about the effectiveness of mint. The ants that march to my house come right through a huge mint patch, then head straight up the side of the house. We found the little hole under the siding where they go---and come out, too. Sometimes it's like a two-lane highway, one lane up, one lane down. I tried drawing chalk lines, which is another remedy I heard of. They didn't like it, but detoured around it. (Not practical to draw chalk lines around the whole house, alas.)

Thanks so much for the advice. We've been dealing with an endless ant colony for the last month and I am so sick of it. I don't leave food out, clean the counter, etc. but I think they still are attracted to the garbage can and the cat's food. I hate to buy traps, as I try to deter things naturally, and I do feel bad for the little buggers. I'll try these things to keep them from coming in.

Kathleen W.s last blog post..<a href="http://katydidandkid.blogspot.com/2008/06/cloth-diapering.html" rel="nofollow">Cloth Diapering</a>
