The ants that march to my house come right through a huge mint patch, then head straight up the side of the house. We found the little hole under the siding where they go---and come out, too. Sometimes it's like a two-lane highway, one lane up, one lane down. I tried drawing chalk lines, which is another remedy I heard of. They didn't like it, but detoured around it. (Not practical to draw chalk lines around the whole house, alas.) Don’t know about the effectiveness of mint. I don't leave food out, clean the counter, etc. but I think they still are attracted to the garbage can and the cat's food. I hate to buy traps, as I try to deter things naturally, and I do feel bad for the little buggers. I'll try these things to keep them from coming in.
