If you’re looking to save money as many of us are, you may want to try your hand at making some of your own health and beauty products at home.  Not only an economical choice, homemade is oftentimes healthier.  Take, for instance, this recipe for homemade sugar scrub.

Simple and versatile, all you need is about a cup of raw sugar, 1/4 cup oil such as almond (that’s my favorite), and a tablespoon of your favorite herb.  You could try dried lavender to relax, rosemary to rejuvenate, or make a blend of soothing chamomile and calendula.  Simply mix everything together in the container you’d like to store it in (with a tight-sealing lid) and massage into skin before a bath or shower.  To make sure the mixture lasts longer without the oil going rancid, try throwing in the contents of one punctured Vitamin E tablet.  Not only will it keep the oil fresh, it’ll add a little healing power to your homemade sugar scrub!

  1. I love sugar scrubs, but they are so expensive. Lots of time I make my own for just one time use. I just use regular sugar and whatever I have on hand. Originally I started doing it just go get rid of last little bit of lotion, body wash or even shampoo left in the bottom of the bottle. I would add a little bit of water and a little big of sugar, just enough to rinse out the bottle. Then I found I liked it so much I would make up some in a baggy or little jar just enough for a couple of showers. Now I just experiment with what I like, I love vanilla, lemon, orange, honey. My niece asked me to make her some brown sugar scrub one time. So I took some almond shea body butter and mixed it with brown sugar and water and a litle cocoa. She said it looked funny going down the drain but smelled and felt fabulous. I don’t know about preservatives and such so I only make my scrubs in small amounts, but I have really enjoyed them.

  2. For a one time use all you really need is 2 tablespoons of white sugar, 1 tablespoon of brown sugar and a little bit of water. It makes your face feel so amazingly soft. I love what it does!
