I believe learning a foreign language is not only important, it’s necessary for our children. It not only develops their minds to think in a new way, helping them to better understand their native tongue, it will someday give them an edge in the job market and in our ever-changing world. Our son is being raised bilingual already, but adding a little Chinese to the mix has been something we’ve wanted to do for him. With the most popular language in the world being Mandarin Chinese, it’s a great language choice. My son has been doing the product testing this time around; he’s been watching a set of three Little Pim Mandarin Chinese Language DVD’s. This set has been created by Pimsleur, one of the best language learning companies around. They also produce other language series such as Spanish, Italian, and more.
The three DVD’s are simple, basic, and fun. A cute little panda bear cartoon introduces the children to hearing Chinese being spoken in small sentences. Then video is shown of real children eating, drinking, and playing while the appropriate Mandarin word is spoken by the panda who has a sweet, childlike voice which really seems to draw my son in. He asks to watch these DVD’s regularly, and after only a few times through, he was repeating the panda. Amazingly, he sometimes says the words to me! Every now and then we’ll be doing something and a strange word comes out that I recognize from the DVD’s – I don’t always know what they mean, though. I guess his almost three-year-old mind is a much better sponge than mine!
In order for our children to grow to think independently, it’s so important for us as parents to give them learning tools now. Teaching them all along that learning happens in the outside world – not just classrooms – will help us to instill in them the importance to always learn and grow. That’s why I’m so happy to be able to offer today’s Little Pim giveaway.
