I wasn’t sure I really understood what macrobiotics was all about. I had a rough idea, but I’ve never studied up on it. After reading Macrobiotics for Life: A Practical Guide to Healing for Body, Mind, and Heart by Simon Brown, I feel like I’ve finally got a handle on the philosophy.
I call it a philosophy because macrobiotics truly is its own way of thinking. I suppose after all this time of working hard at what I eat, I too have been practicing what I believe is a kind of macrobiotics. In a nutshell, macrobiotics is living a healthy lifestyle and eating natural, clean foods while caring for your mind and soul as well. It’s a whole package, really. By reading Macrobiotics for Life, I learned how this lifestyle is to be tailor made for every individual. Some who practice macrobiotics are vegetarians. Some eat quite a bit of meat while yet others are into raw foods like seeds, sprouts and nuts. But one thing they all seem to have in common: They aim to be in tune with what their body needs.
Simon Brown stresses that what’s good for one person isn’t necessarily good for another, and that oftentimes what’s good for someone right now may not be several years from now. For instance, sometimes it’s best to lay off the salt. But as our bodies change, there may come a time when you find you actually need it where you didn’t before.
The book covers quite a bit of territory, encouraging the reader to take a close look at themselves from several angles, all the while keeping an open mind to new possibilities. Brown discusses such topics as proper nutrition for the mind, the different energies present in foods, the history of macrobiotics, and of course recipes. The recipe section contains beautiful color photos along with 35 pages of salads, main courses, even desserts that can accompany your newfound lifestyle.
Whether you’re a longtime practitioner of macrobiotics, or like me, you always wondered what it was all about, you’ll find Macrobiotics for Life to be an informative and thorough book that will lead you to some serious introspection on your diet, your mind, and even your soul.
