Herbalist Maribeth Riggs has a great remedy for treating children’s respiratory problems from colds, flu, sinusitis, hoarseness, bronchitis, asthma, hay fever and allergies. Of course you must always be careful to closely monitor respiratory issues and keep in contact with your child’s pediatrician. This remedy for your children’s respiratory problems should lend a little relief.
Take one 5-inch long piece of licorice root (found in health food stores or online), 2 Tbs. honey, and 1 cup water. Place in a pot with a lid and cover. Bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes. (If you happen to have Chinese licorice, no need to add the honey.)
Remove the licorice root and cool, allowing your child to suck on the root after it’s cooled enough to hold. If you like, you can reserve the liquid and it can be drunk as a tea. You may save the root and place it, dried, into a jar with a lid. It should keep for up to six months.
Licorice root is a little stimulating, and it’s also a bit of a laxative so don’t give it to children in the evenings. Most kids really like the taste of the licorice root, so it makes a great natural remedy for all sorts of respiratory problems. You won’t hear too many complaints about having to take this medicine!
