Natural Sleep Aids for Bedtime

Chamomile: Of course you know I’m going to recommend chamomile tea; that’s a given. I steep about a tablespoon of the herb in nearly boiling water for 10 – 15 minutes.

But I find while chamomile is more mild and soothing, catnip makes you downright tired. It’s also great for relieving a fever. I steep this like chamomile – 1 Tbs. in nearly boiling water for 10 – 15 minutes.

Lettuce: And you thought I only wanted you to put your greens in a smoothie! I haven’t tried this one yet, but I plan to give it a test run one of these nights soon. They say it works pretty fast and I hear tell it’s especially good for insomniacs. Pour 1 cup boiling water over a cup of shredded lettuce and let it steep for 30 minutes. If you don’t fall asleep waiting for it, strain the liquid and drink.

  1. My dad has used melatonin and swears by it! I’ve not tried it myself. I did try the lettuce tea, and although I can say I had a great night’s sleep that night, I want to try a few more times before I say it’s definitely a big winner.

  2. I took trazadone for years. I could fall asleep fairly easily but about 1 or 2 am I’d wake up and be up for hours every night. The trazadone worked but I got tired of taking it so went to a Chinese herbalogist, took the potion he mixed up for 10 days and, voila – I’m off the trazadone.
