We all know how kids’ music can get – round and round music with high-pitched tinkly Romper Room sounds, ear worms that keep us insomniac parents up all night with a “Wheels on the Bus” something or other thrumming in our ears. If there’s one thing on earth I’m more than happy to discover, it’s kids’ music I actually enjoy listening to! Oran Etkin’s Wake Up Clarinet is just such a find.
We’re music lovers in my family. I grew up with a piano teacher for a mother. When I was 11, I spent my allowance on a cassette recording of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. I know full well kids have the ability to enjoy great music right from their early years, and Oran Etkin seems to get that too. Wake Up Clarinet is loaded with New Orleans style jazz music that will have your kids (and you) dancing in the streets. The hip beats, the complex rhythms and catchy tunes make for an ear treat. Even the lyrics are worthy, teaching kids about high notes and low notes, how instruments “talk” to each other and to us, even a bit of a history lesson on King Louis XIV that, if you’re not from Louisiana yourself, you may not know!
We’ve listened to this CD more times than I can count over the past month, and no one’s tired of it yet. In fact, when my son wants to listen to some kids’ music, I’m not sure which one of us reaches for Oran’s CD first – mom or son.
Want to win your own copy of Wake Up Clarinet? We’re giving one away! You won’t be sorry if you win it. Don’t believe me? Check out the above video if you haven’t already. When Oran and his clarinet come marchin’ in, you’ll definitely want to be in that number.
