Congrats to the Domestic Spaz – You’ve won!
I’ve discussed SIDS on this site before and how important it is to have truly healthy bedding. For several years, countries outside of the U.S. (all over Europe, Australia, New Zealand, etc.) have promoted safe, chemical-free baby bedding as being the surest way to avoid losing babies to SIDS. So why isn’t it promoted here? The possibilities are too numerous to list today, but fortunately we do have places to go to find proper, safe bedding for our smallest family members. Naturally Good not only sells organic cotton and wool bedding for everyone, but they are having a dkMommy Spot giveaway here: One full set of organic cradle bedding for one of you.
Naturally Good sells lots of chemical-free items, which we really like around here, and their baby bedding selection is most impressive. Some of the common bedding chemicals Naturally Good avoids are: formaldehyde, arsenic, pesticide residue, and flame retardants (known to mix with a baby’s fluid, producing toxic fumes). In the place of all those chemicals is a peace of mind every parent wants when their newborn is sleeping.
What’s included in today’s giveaway? Glad you asked! One organic wool puddle pad for the cradle ($33 retail), one organic cotton pad for the cradle ($33 retail), and one organic natural sateen sheet for the cradle ($20 retail). That’s $86 worth of natural, organic baby cradle bedding. If you aren’t expecting a newborn, these would make the perfect baby shower gift. If someone would have given me this as a shower gift, I think I would have flipped right over my own greenie self.
3 Ways to Win:

Wow! A lot of that information is very scary. It seems like even when you try to do the right thing, by buying a new mattress, etc. it still may not be the right choice. I had no idea that there weren’t any restrictions on chemicals used in mattresses. I was amazed by the comparison of data regarding SIDS between places like the US and Japan and Russia. I will need to go back and read further at another time.
I would love to be entered to win your giveaway. This is a fabulous prize.
What interesting information. I learned that in a reused mattress, fungus established in prior use cause toxic gas generation to commence sooner and in greater volume.
I’d love to win this to give as a baby shower gift to my niece who is due in November.
Our family loves strawberries and we knew that they were good for you for antioxidants and such, but to find out that they are good for boosting my metabolism and eventually losing weight? Bonus! Sweet…
The article on the link of fungus growing in baby mattresses and SIDS is very scary. I’ll be checking my mattress cover to make sure it’s cotton.

Keep the baby on their side
the body stores many of the chemicals found in mattresses in fatty tissue, including the brain.
This might be obvious but I didn’t realize that there were chemicals in baby bedding. Or any bedding for that matter. I would love to win this.

I didn’t know the mattresses were so harmful. I have always tried to keep up with the SIDS warnings. I will have to spread the news. Thanks for the information.

When we buy new mattress’s I keep the plastic on plus I buy a zipper plastic cover the I cover that with a cloth mattress pad, then my sheet. My family hates this process but I thought I was keeping them safe from the dust mites, never thought about chemicals.
My son is expexting his first child and has been telling me about the fears of sids.

Thank you for the PSA. As a nurse we frequently surprise parents with tips such as not smoking, choosing safe bedding that fits snugly into the cribs, not covering baby’s face with blankets, and not having baby share the bed with stuffed animals. It’s such a tragic loss and makes me teary thinking of real life stories we’ve heard in our work.
My best friend miscarried last winter and is finally pregnant again and due later this fall/early winter. What a blessing this gift set would be for her.

That’s horrible that SIDs was so rare before the 1950s — horrible because mankind is causing its own problems…
I’m going to have to check back and read more!

One interesting, yet disgusting, thing I read was:
Every mattress was infected with the S. Brevicaulis fungus as an organism and spores
I think I just threw up in my mouth! Ewwwww! I had NO IDEA. None whatsoever of the problems with bedding. This really makes you stop and think!
Wow! The link between toxic nerve gases in mattresses and SIDS is scary. We are due with #2 and I think we will be sure to get a new mattress for him/her. I read that the risk increases as the mattress is used with additional babies.
