Some experts in organic gardening hold a believe that hydroponic gardening can’t be considered as a part of organic gardening as it doesn't incorporate soil at all. They somehow believe that true state of organic gardening only can be achieved by using only rich and loamy soil. The sentiment bears some truth as organic gardening starts with good quality of soil. Organic Hydroponic Gardening however, does exist as an alternative. This type of gardening even hold some advantages over regular organic gardening.
1.Use Less Soil
Organic Hydroponic Gardening has almost the same principles as regular organic gardening; the difference is that it doesn't use soil. This type of gardening utilizes water to deliver nutrients the plants need to grow. But it still needs a growing medium, a solid thing to place the plants' roots into. However, the growing medium doesn’t provide any kind of nutrients, it’s purpose is only to root the plants into as well as to retain the nutrient rich water.
Anything organic can be used as a growing medium. Perilte and vermiculite are commonly used. (careful though as you’re handling vermiculite, as it’s the source of asbestos). Other choices include cotton, straw, plant fiber and other organic materials.
2.Water is important
In Organic Hydroponic Gardening, the plants get their nutrients from the dissolved substances in the water. So, anything you put into the water should be organic, following the guides of organic gardening. Compost tea is an excellent choice to use in organic hydroponic method. To made one, first you soak compost into the water and strain out the remaining solid material. The water would filled with rich nutrients that can be used to feed your plants.
You can also use manure tea in your hydroponic gardening project. Beware though, manure tea is potential to be a source of bacterial contamination (including the deadly varieties of E. Coli) of your crops. That’s why it’s important that you should sterilize well the manure first before start to make manure tea. The procedure to make manure tea is similar to the way you make compost tea, dissolve manure in the water and then strain out the remaining solid material.
Other organic choices are fish emulsion and seaweed. No special fertilizers should be used as you frequently refresh and circulate the nutrient mixture.
Organic Hydroponic Gardening has its own advantages. The biggest one is that it can be done in any place, indoor or outdoor, as it doesn’t need soil to support the grow of the plants.
It can be an alternative way in growing crops for places where growing crops is hard because the soil has been depleted. Fun fact: Hydroponic Gardening has been performed in outer space living like in the ISS, and certainly will become an important part in our attempts to colonize other planets. It has been widely used by urban gardeners for rooftop planting, allowing city dwellers to plant healthy food in unused space. It becomes a great alternative, as not every rooftop in the city can withstand the weight of soil used in regular organic gardening.
Yo see now, hydroponic gardening can be organic also. It’s different from regular gardening in a sense, but possess some advantages on its own. Also, the most important thing: healthy Organic Hydroponic Gardening allows you to grow and harvest your own healthy, organic crops.
