Are you a jewelry nut? Then it won’t surprise you at all when you find yourself ooh-ing and ah-ing the jewelry from Palma Collection. That’s because their jewelry is made from the tagua nut, a form of vegetable ivory. See that lovely number to the right? That’s the Hossada Necklace I’ve been donning of late, and the varied blue slices of dried tagua really do look and feel like ivory – without the environmental cost or harm to our elephant friends. It’s really a stunning piece on, and it feels very feminine and light. The strap is made from woven wax cotton straps that look like suede but are vegan friendly. Since each piece is handmade and dyed, every one is unique. Mine, for instance, shows more variation in the blues than does the one in the photo shown here.
Palma Collection produces their vegetable ivory jewelry in South America, in the Pacific coast rainforests, the only place you’ll find the palm tree responsible for producing the tagua nut. The nuts of this tree are harvested after the fruit has fallen to the ground, making it a very eco-friendly process. And the resulting jewelry is truly unique! Necklaces, earrings, and bracelets come in a variety of colors and styles. For instance, check out the Chikle, the darling necklace to the left. Looks good enough to eat!

Whoever it was that looked at that strange fuzzy nut and said, “Hey. I can make some fabulous jewelry out of that thing,” is a genius. I also hope with every ounce of hope in my being that nobody has cut off their finger or drilled a hole in their thumb creating these gorgeous works of art. That machinery is pretty darn frightening.
