One place many people don’t think of when trying to avoid their exposure to toxic chemicals in the home is their laundry detergent.  What you use to wash your clothes stays on your clothes; this can soak into your skin and become a part of you, so it’s important to make healthy choices in the laundry room as well as the kitchen and the makeup bag.  And as we’re learning this week, avoiding chemicals is a great step towards cancer prevention.  Today’s review has been conducted and written by Jane Marie of Thyme for Herbs.

I’ve been using Selestial Soap to do my laundry for a few weeks now. I have to admit to being a little skeptical because my past experience with “Green” laundry detergents hasn’t been the best. I’m all for taking care of our environment and avoiding chemical use in my home, but I do like clean laundry. So there was my dilemma.

I am happy to say that Selestial Soap lives up to its promises. It’s non-sudsing (which takes a little getting used to), color safe, and uses no phosphates. But at the same time it does a very good job of cleaning while leaving no residue. I am using the Citrus Scented detergent which is a very mild scent extracted from essential oils only, no perfumes. I enjoy the orange and lemon scent, but it is only detected as I pour the detergent into the machine. It quickly disappears during the washing cycle and what remains while drying is that fresh outdoor smell of clean air and sunshine that used to come from my mother’s laundry when she hung clothes on the line.

I think Selestial Soap really got doing the laundry right. They believe in ”saving the planet within your budget” and that ”It shouldn’t cost more to live green.”  That’s a philosophy I can live by.

Want to win?  Selestial Soap is giving away a case of their liquid laundry detergent!  ($41.75 retail) The winner will receive three 50-oz. bottles of Citrus and three 50-oz. bottles of Unscented all-natural, chemical free detergent.

  9. Suds leave a residue on fabric that attracts dirt and grease, dulls colors and affects breathability. The residue often contains chemicals that irritate skin and cause allergic reactions.

  15. I liked the Selestial Soap Natural Liquid Laundry Detergent Lilac Scent! I also learned that phosphates affect the pH of our water supply leading to problems such as algae blooms lower oxygen levels in rivers, lakes and streams, suffocating aquatic life.

  22. I learned “Contrary to popular belief, suds are not necessary for cleaning and can actually harm fabrics and machinery. Suds leave a residue on fabrics that attracts dirt and grease in the air and affects the fabric’s breathability. In your machine, suds cause drag that decreases spin speed and increases required drying time. Over time, excess suds can cause failure of drain pumps.”

Scented versions use natural oils, never perfumes.

  24. Our kids have sensitive skin so we consider the fact that Selestial Soap’s non-sudsing formulation rinses cleanly without the residue left behind by conventional detergents to be an important feature and combined with the fact that the product is non-toxic and safe for the environment is a ‘win-win’ situation! :)

  25. I don’t know if I’m developing new allergies but lately my clothes have made me more and more itchy – and I really think the right luandry detergent like Selestial would be just what the doctor would order!

P.S. I totally agree with Roxy (above) suds – especially in laundry are mostly irrevelant and the more you see of them the more they are going to leave lots of residue in your clothing and linens!

  26. Tuesday’s entry. Thanks!

  27. I would love to try the Selestial Soap Natural Liquid Laundry Detergent Lilac Scent

  28. I learned that it’s ok if your laundry detergent doesn’t suds up. In fact it’s better for your washer if it doesn’t. thanks!

  29. I like that Selestial soap products are budget-friendly in addition to being eco-friendly. It is comparably priced to other shelf products but delivers a superior performance. It rinses clean from your fabrics, that means less allergic reactions and more breathability, which can also alleviate reactions.
