We’ve all heard those kids’ CDs – you know the ones. The hair-pulling repetitive tunes, ear worms that wake you up at 3 a.m. with a tra-la-la and a boom-boom in the brain. Why can’t kids’ CDs be fun for parents as well as for kids? Putumayo proves it can happen with their Putumayo Kids Series.
Putumayo Kids offers a large selection of world beat music that’s ear chatching for all ages – from baby to adult – in the series “Playground” and “Dreamland”. If you have ever had the pleasure of listening to Putumayo music, then you’re familiar with their creative celebration of music from around the world. While listening to Celtic Dreamland, I thought I recognized a tune or two from my own Celtic Putumayo CD Celtic Tides. And I’m quite certain I have heard Omara Portuondo’s “Guantanamera” (from the Latin Playground) on one of my Latin Putumayo CD’s. I guess that’s part of the Putumayo brilliance – they recognize that there are songs from all across the globe for us all to enjoy, right down to the planet’s youngest members.
Perhaps the most fun CD of the bunch is called Sesame Street Playground. Sesame Street isn’t just an American phenomenon. It’s all over the world! Children in all corners of the globe watch their own versions of the popular show. The children of India, for instance, tune into “Gali Gali Sim Sim”. Chinese kids sing along to Rubber Duckie (or Xiagn pi xiao ya – my favorite on the CD), compplete with their own cast of characters. Along with the CD is a DVD with six music videos from different variations of Sesame Street such as Israeli, Russian, and Argentinian. It’s quickly become a favorite of my son, and I’m happy to let him watch and learn.
