The Starfrit Alternative Fry Pan

The Starfrit Alternative Fry Pan

I used to have a very expensive set of Teflon cookware.  I thought it was a great thing to have; easy to clean, heavy duty, good heat distribution.  But when I got my first parrot, I was told to never use cookware with Teflon coatings because the fumes coming from a pan on high heat could kill my bird.  Made me wonder what it was doing to me as well!  So I found other ways of getting by, but I was never satisfied.  As I grew more knowledgeable on healthy alternatives, I found it was pretty hard to get non-stick cookware that was safe… and that actually worked.  I got a few iron pans which I do like, but they’re darned heavy and require special care.  But other than that, it was lots of scrubbing and soaking.  Recently I found out about some eco-friendly cookware from a company called Starfrit.  I’ve been testing out their Alternative Fry Pan, and I’m relieved to have finally found something that works.

While not all Starfrit’s products are in the eco-friendly category, their Alternative Eco-Friendly Cookware line is.  Coated with ceramic, it’s completely chemical free and provides a surprisingly effective non-stick surface.  First thing I tested was frying eggs because I’ve had eggs stick to non-stick cookware in the past, so I figured it’d be a pretty thorough test.  The instructions call for very little cooking oil, a healthy benefit, so I added just a smidge.  Even the oil wouldn’t stick to the pan!  It kind of congregated with itself, refusing to coat much.  When I added the eggs to the hot pan and was ready to flip them, I was happy to see nothing stuck from the eggs either.  Easy to flip, even easier to clean.  I waited for the pan to cool, then ran it under water.  Grease and remaining egg bits just slid off and down the drain.  At that moment I was sold.

Other great features:  I love the handle.  Very ergonomic, comfortable, and heat resistant.  The pan itself is made of 99% recycled aluminum, and heat distribution is very even.  The pan is relatively lightweight, and although I still feel it necessary to be careful with the surface, I can still use my metal spatulas.  Great for someone who doesn’t choose plastic utensils.

Overall I’ve got to say the Starfrit Alternative pan is a definite winner.  In fact, I’m hoping to go back and buy some other pieces or perhaps the set because I’m that impressed.  This particular sized pan (28 cm) is $39.99, so it’s a little pricey, but if you consider it an investment, you’ve got yourself something that’s recycled, safe, and long-lasting.

  2. I would love to try the supreme slicer set. There has to be a safe way for me to slice veggies. A knife isn’t it — my son reminds me that he has had to go with me to our minor emergency center twice because knives and I don’t get along very well.

  10. Silicone Spatulas with Quick Fix caught my attention. I love the idea of food dripping from the spatula back into the pot. It never fails that I make a huge mess when cooking something like spaghetti sauce, because even a spoon rest gets so messy!
