english-retreads-beetle-handbagFor some people, if you give them lemons they’ll make lemonade. But Heather English is a little different.  Give her an old tire and she’ll make a handbag.  Her burst of creativity was inspired by a lazy trip down a river, innertubing and wondering how she could make herself a nice handbag without using leather.  Her solution?  She was floating on it.

English Retreads is a handbag company with a unique twist on fashion.  I’ve been testing out the Small Beetle Handbag, which I pronounced “darling” immediately upon opening.  At first glance, you’d think you were looking at a black leather handbag.  But on closer inspection, you begin to see little bits of worn print, ridges, and faint patterns that all occur in a rubber innertube.  The bag is constructed well and opens wide with plenty of room inside.  Of course the bag is durable, and if you need to wash it, a bit of soap and water does the trick nicely.  (I tried it after slopping some Chinese takeout on the side.  I was – uh – testing the bag’s durability, of course.)  Want a shinier purse?  Wipe it down with tire cleaner!

The best part of English Retreads?  All the items are made of recycled material.  I’m seeing more and more of a trend these days towards hip, fashionable items made from recycled materials.  I think we’ll be seeing a lot more of this as recycling comes to stay in the limelight.  And I for one am thoroughly enjoying watching the creativity of companies like English Retreads as they try their hand at seeing what floats in the world of recycled fashion.

Want to win your own Small Beetle Handbag ($169 retail)?  English Retreads is giving one away to a dkM reader!

16 DVD's? Now, that's a lot of storybook classics!

16 DVD's? Now, that's a lot of storybook classics!

It’s no secret to the loyal readers of dkM that my son loves his Scholastic Storybook Treasures DVD’s.  I wish you could have seen the look on his face when the Treasury of 100 Storybook Classics Set, which includes a whopping 16 DVD’s,  arrived at our house.  What big excitement for such a little guy!  I was about as excited as he was because the collection is filled with stories I’m already quite familiar with, like Curious George, Rapunzel, and The Three Billy Goats Gruff.  It took us quite awhile to make it through the whole collection, but we did it.

My son doesn’t watch television, mostly because my husband and I don’t really either.  We made a choice long ago that we’d rather have more control over what is going into our son’s brain, and with television being what it is, we opted instead to search out DVD’s with some substance to them.  With the Scholastic DVD’s, my son is watching short stories that not only allow him to read along, but there are no flashy images, no violence, and NO commercials!  Thank heavens for that.  And since many of the stories are narrated by the likes of Meryl Streep who, I might add, is one fabulous narrator, I find myself enjoying stories like “Chrysanthemum” right along with my son.  I also enjoy hearing  a 3 1/2 year old repeat the word “Chrysanthemum”.   Boy, does that crack me up.

Want to win your own monstrously huge “Treasury of 100 Storybook Classics” DVD Set ($99.95 retail)?

NightBeforeChristmas2pkDVD-NSIt’s the latest of the Storybook Treasures DVD’s – “The Night Before Christmas Special Edition” DVD Set.  This set includes 12 holiday read-along stories on 2 DVD’s.  Released on December 8th, it’s just in time for Christmas.  My son and I gave it our thorough reviewing process which included much shared viewing and discussion time.  (My favorite part?  The snuggling!)

This set has all the warm and glowing holiday feel to it, along with familiar tales such as ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas and Little Drummer Boy, as well as some looks into the celebrations of other cultures in Too Many Tamales and In the Month of Kislev.  My son thoroughly enjoyed Sam and the Lucky Money, a Chinese New Year’s story, as it ties in nicely with his Mandarin Chinese language hobby and “practicing” Tai Chi.  The stories are brilliantly told, colorful, and so much more fulfilling than your average kids’ television show!  Another great job by Scholastic and Weston Woods Studios.

Picture 1Looking for something unique for your kids this Christmas?  Something that requires both mental and physical effort, something you’ll be tempted to try yourself?  Challenge & Fun’s Labyrinth Balance Board could be just what you’re looking for.  This wooden toy is a great way to give your kids some fun active play.  Standing on the balance board isn’t as easy as it looks, especially when you’ve got my “grace and coordination”!  But it is fun and gives the legs a real workout.  By adding a maze carved into the board’s hardwood top, kids can try and move marbles through the pattern by tipping the board this way and that – but all without losing their balance!  Pretty tricky, I can assure you.

I like toys like this because they’re not the average toss-aside plastic gadget that’s invariably forgotten somewhere around January 3rd.  No, this is one of those things no one else got under the tree; it wasn’t advertised every two minutes during cartoons, and since it’s solid wood, it won’t fall apart either.  A darned good list of qualities if you ask me.  So enter to win your own – or buy one from Challenge & Fun.  Then again, maybe you’d better order two.  The whole family will be lining up to give this one a try.

Home-for-HolidaysThe smells of natural pine, fragrant vanilla, and sweet orange are all part of The Giving Essence’s “Home for the Holidays” All-Natural Essential Spray.  It’s my personal favorite; I’ve been know to use it throughout the year whenever I’d like a nice relaxing mood booster.

My Essential Sprays came about when I realized that most people enjoy having an air freshener or two about the home, but finding one that isn’t chemical based is next to impossible.  Many times we forget to think about what goes into the making of the products that effect the air we breathe in our homes; we know little about what’s really in the candles and sprays found in most stores.  The Essential Sprays from The Giving Essence are made of simple ingredients like pure essential oils I’ve hand selected for their elegant fragrances.  And I’ve given each bottle enough essential oil so you’ll only need 2 – 3 light mists to freshen a whole room.  That means that cute little bottle will be around  for quite awhile.

Want to win your own Home for the Holidays Essential Spray?  I’m giving one away!
