Today’s product review of Vaska Herbatergent, a natural laundry detergent, is by guest writer Jane Marie of Thyme for Herbs and An Herbal Bedfellow.

I’ve been trying a new natural laundry detergent lately, called Herbatergent from Vaska. It’s concentrated so the 48 ounce bottle takes care of 32 loads!

After a few weeks I felt it was safe to say that it performs very well, and I am quite pleased. Not only for the clean clothes and fresh scent, but because it is chemical free. I’ve put it through the wringer (in the old days I really would have), and it worked just as well on delicates as it did on dirty jeans and sweatshirts.

This non-toxic, environmentally safe product is used by some of the finest hotels in San Francisco ; namely the Ritz-Carlton and the Joie de Vivre. The San Francisco Giants think enough of it to use it on their linens, and I can imagine what those towels look like after a game!

Herbatergent is made from real lavender and powerful botanicals. I used the allergen and scent-free product, which is great for babies or people with sensitive skin.  It also comes in a light lavender scent – my favorite; it think I’ll have to try that one next.  It’s also graywater and septic tank safe, so no worries there. The bottles are made from HDPE, which is short for “high-density polyethylene” That simply means it is recyclable in most cities.

All in all, I give Herbatergent a thumbs up!

One place many people don’t think of when trying to avoid their exposure to toxic chemicals in the home is their laundry detergent.  What you use to wash your clothes stays on your clothes; this can soak into your skin and become a part of you, so it’s important to make healthy choices in the laundry room as well as the kitchen and the makeup bag.  And as we’re learning this week, avoiding chemicals is a great step towards cancer prevention.  Today’s review has been conducted and written by Jane Marie of Thyme for Herbs.

I’ve been using Selestial Soap to do my laundry for a few weeks now. I have to admit to being a little skeptical because my past experience with “Green” laundry detergents hasn’t been the best. I’m all for taking care of our environment and avoiding chemical use in my home, but I do like clean laundry. So there was my dilemma.

I am happy to say that Selestial Soap lives up to its promises. It’s non-sudsing (which takes a little getting used to), color safe, and uses no phosphates. But at the same time it does a very good job of cleaning while leaving no residue. I am using the Citrus Scented detergent which is a very mild scent extracted from essential oils only, no perfumes. I enjoy the orange and lemon scent, but it is only detected as I pour the detergent into the machine. It quickly disappears during the washing cycle and what remains while drying is that fresh outdoor smell of clean air and sunshine that used to come from my mother’s laundry when she hung clothes on the line.

I think Selestial Soap really got doing the laundry right. They believe in ”saving the planet within your budget” and that ”It shouldn’t cost more to live green.”  That’s a philosophy I can live by.

Want to win?  Selestial Soap is giving away a case of their liquid laundry detergent!  ($41.75 retail) The winner will receive three 50-oz. bottles of Citrus and three 50-oz. bottles of Unscented all-natural, chemical free detergent.
