Sweet Orange is a warm and sunny essential oil that comes from cold-pressing the peel of the sweet orange. It’s known for its uplifting scent and is often used in perfume making. This is a safe oil for children when used for its vapor; it induces a sense of well-being, lifts nervous tension and stress, and is a great aid for helping children sleep. It’s used by aromatherapists as an antidepressant, an antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, sedative, and antiseptic.
The antiseptic properties make it handy for housecleaning. I love to use Sweet Orange Oil in my homemade cleaning supplies. Since vinegar and water in a spray bottle is my favorite all-purpose cleaner, I usually add several drops to a bottle of the mixture to increase cleaning power and to cut the vinegar smell. Sweet Orange cuts through the grease quite well and adds an extra kick to vinegar’s already dirt-whopping power.
One simple warning with Sweet Orange: it’s not to be used topically if you are going to be exposed to sunlight. If you have a product containing the oil, be sure to stay out of direct sun, as it increases sensitivity to light and you may just find yourself in need of some natural sunburn relief!
