This past October I read and reviewed The Earthwise Herbal – A Complete Guide to Old World Medicine.  It quickly became one of my favorite books in my herbal reference library.  So when herbalist and author Matthew Wood recently published the companion book The Earthwise Herbal: A Complete Guide to New World Medicinal Plants, I couldn’t wait to dig in.  Every bit as fascinating for the herb lover, this second of two books is loaded with a multitude of wondrous North American native plants.  Wood offers a thorough materia medica that’s easy to reference.  Each plant within the book contains such interesting historical and general background info that you may just find yourself reading this reference book from cover to cover (which I’d highly recommend). His ability to explain these plants in a way that makes the information stick is of great value to anyone studying herbs.  If you’ve ever read through a list of the uses for any one medicinal herb, for instance, you might have discovered it was difficult to piece together how one little plant can do all that! But Wood’s approach allows the reader to make sense of each plant as it is used to treat the whole person, not just a smattering of seemingly disconnected symptoms.

In addition, readers will find the chapters preceding the materia medica to be packed with useful information covering such things as Southern blood typology, an explanation of the six tissue states, specific medicine, and holistic pharmacology.  Overall, it doesn’t matter what page you randomly flip to – you will learn something and you’ll learn something useful!

I can’t say enough about The Earthwise Herbal.  Matthew Wood has put his over 25 years of experience as a practicing herbalist into the heart of this book, giving us all something worthy of study and reference no doubt for generations to come.  His understanding of the spirit of herbalism, along with his love of the craft, is contagious – I sincerely hope many people will catch a good dose of his knowledge!

Congratulations, Dawn!  This book is fantastic – you’re in for a real treat!

I have a small stack of herb books that I hold in high regard.  These books and manuals are turned to again and again for answers, discovery, and sheer enjoyment.  I have a new one to add to that special section of my bookshelf:  ”The Earthwise Herbal–A Complete Guide to Old World Medicinal Plants”.  This book by Matthew Wood is a great pleasure to read and still thorough as an excellent reference guide.  Whether you’re a professional herbalist or someone fascinated with herbs who just wants to know more, I’d highly recommend The Earthwise Herbal.

Wood’s book starts off with an amazing introduction (when was the last time you heard that?) and includes several chapters that give you some history behind herbalism, an overview of the different forms, and instructions on how to use the book.  Following is his own Materia Medica (all the herbs, their descriptions and uses for medicinal purposes) that he has put together over a 25-year period of practicing herbalism.  The herbs are organized alphabetically by Latin name and are followed with such fascinating historical and medicinal descriptions in a way I’ve not seen in other herb books.  Most herbs, as you may have noticed if you’ve been hanging out here very much, have such long and varied lists of what they’re good for that it can be quite overwhelming and near impossible to remember.  But The Earthwise Herbal makes sense of it all.  By reading through the information on, say, lavender, you’ll suddenly have a good understanding of why lavender works for all those seemingly unrelated ailments.

I am very excited that the publishers of The Earthwise Herbal, North Atlantic Books, is offering up one free copy to a lucky dkMommy Spot reader!  And in honor of the Bloggy Giveaways Carnival, I’m kicking in a little additional contest “rule” to help increase your chances of winning–you can enter once a day until the contest runs its course!  So bookmark this post and come back again if you’ve really got a hanker for the book.  I guarantee, whether you win or buy, the book is worth the effort.
