Our family has been including flax in our diet for a few years now.  It ends up in all sorts of foods, even green smoothies and my dogs’ food!  (My vet says my dogs have the healthiest of coats, and I attribute it to their healthy diet.)  I wanted to give Tropical Traditions’ Organic Golden Flaxseed a try because I’ve been so impressed with the company and the quality of their products.  I certainly wasn’t disappointed when it came to the flaxseed!

The flax comes in a sealed freshness bag, and it was definitely fresh when it arrived.  After a few years of eating flax, it’s pretty easy to tell when you’ve got fresh seeds and when you’ve got something that’s been sitting around for awhile.  No doubts here!  Tropical Traditions’ flaxseed has made its way into countless smoothies, has been sprinkled on oatmeal, munched straight from the bag, and even enjoyed by the canine members of our family.  I can easily say it’s the best quality flax I’ve had, and I wholeheartedly give it a dkM thumbs up!

I’m once again glad to offer a giveaway from Tropical Traditions.  One of you will be able to win a full-sized bag of Organic Golden Flaxseed, and see if you agree with my observations.  (Heck, one of my friends makes a killer chocolate chip cookie with flax in it!  The possibilities are endless here.)

I feel like I’ve learned a great skin care secret since I’ve discovered the use of coconut oil products, in particular those from our friends at Tropical Traditions. I got hooked on their skin care first with the moisturizing lotions, and lately I’ve been using their Lavender Moisturizing Cream for my face.  The ingredients are simple, straight-forward and natural, earning a big dkM thumbs up.  It’s a great moisturizer for evening, especially after some sun exposure. It applies thick but soaks up into the skin quickly, and by morning I’m able to tell I’ve used it.

The Moisturizing Cream comes in several scents and unscented, and I selected lavender.  Fragrances are not imitation, but are instead from natural essential oils, and I find the lavender oil to be a perfect before-bed scent.  Lavender oil is known among aromatherapists to be both relaxing and uplifting, so it’s a great choice for a moisturizer.

Tropical Traditions is giving away one full-sized 4-oz. jar of their Moisturizing Cream (winner’s choice on scents) to one dkM reader!  It retails for $19.50, but there’s currently a sale underway, so swing by and take a look for yourself. And in the meantime, enter to win here!

Peanut butter fans, this one’s for you!  Ever thought of mixing pure organic peanut butter with the health benefits of coconut oil?  Me neither, but Tropical Traditions has.  I have been sampling  a jar of this unique twist on an old favorite, and here’s the scoop!

I thought the coconut peanut butter might be overwhelmingly “coconutty”, but it’s not – it’s a subtle addition to a familiar flavor.  The texture is different than regular peanut butter, too.  Because of the addition of the coconut oil which is solid when cool and liquid when slightly warm, the cooled texture of this coconut peanut butter reminds me very much of the filling of a peanut butter cup.  I’ve even scooped out spoonfuls of it, rolled it into little balls in the palms of my hands, and given them to my son as a healthy and fun snack.  When spread on warm toast, it’s instantly soft and fluid as you’d expect peanut butter to be.

Perhaps my best experience with it was when my mother made me some peanut better cookies with it.  (Oh my!  Did I eat most of them all by myself???  Oops!)

Now that I have all you peanut butter lovers drooling on your keyboards, it’s time to offer you a chance to win your own 16-ounce jar!  ($14.99 retail; on sale now for $9.99.)

And here's my favorite honey pot...

I have always loved honey, and it amazes me how honey that is gathered from variouslocations and produced by bees who visit differing types of plant life can vary so much.  For me, it’s part of honey’s wonderment, along with its ability to heal and rejuvenate through its natural properties.  It only made sense that, since I’ve been consistently impressed with the quality of all the Tropical Traditions products I tried thus far, it was only a matter of time before I tested the Organic Canadian Raw Honey.

Tropical Traditions gets its wild and organic honey from the vast  natural forests of Canada, one of the few places large and wild enough to ensure the bees collect pollen from only organic flowers.  The honey is unprocessed, giving it an opaque whitish color and thick consistency much different from what most of us envision when we think of honey.

In fact, this wild honey is so thick and dense you won’t be pouring it or squeezing it from a plastic honey bear.  Instead it comes in a wide-mouthed glass jar, perfect for scooping out with a spoon – just the way I choose to enjoy it.

And do I enjoy it?  A resounding “yes!”  This is by far the best honey I’ve ever tasted, and I’m a little embarrassed to say that in the three or four weeks it’s been in the house, I haven’t shared any – yet.  No doubt generosity will get the best of me eventually, but for now I’m content to hide in a corner of the kitchen, jar and spoon in hand. The honey is heavenly – at first delicate, then the taste builds to a full yet smooth flavor, almost cooling.  While the texture is initially thick, it’s not grainy like some raw unprocessed honeys tend toward.  In my opinion it is preferable to any candy or confection I might otherwise crave.

Great accolades from yours truly, indeed, but highly deserving.  Once I finally bend and start sharing my organic Canadian raw honey with my family, the emptied-out jar will certainly be replaced by another… then another.

Want to win your own?  Of  course you do!  Tropical Traditions is giving away one 17-ounce jar to a very lucky dkM reader!

Giveaways and coupon codes here!

shredded_coconutsm-1DkMommy Spot has reviewed Tropical Traditions’ coconut oil and their moisturizing lotion, both with positive results.  But I was curious: how would their coconut be?  I like coconut and I often use it in various healthy snack recipes, so when given the opportunity to try some of their shredded coconut, I gladly accepted.

The coconut arrived here in a large 3.5-lb. tub, which is a heck of a lot of coconut!  Plenty to experiment with, for certain.  And since it arrived shortly before Christmas, I knew I’d have no problems finding things to do with it.  No doubt the tub would be successful at keeping the product fresh – it’s a bear to open!  But I’ve been able to keep smaller amounts of the coconut in a sealed glass jar in the kitchen.  The rest I store in the pantry.

First thing I did with the coconut was, of course, to taste it.  Surprisingly very fresh, this coconut is also organic and loaded with flavor.  Many times I’ve purchased fresh coconuts, and this tasted as though it was just opened.  No preservatives either, like the stuff in little plastic bags at the grocery store, and the expiration date says I have until April of 2011 to use it, so no preservatives necessary.

What have I made with the product?  I made coconut date balls, I sprinkled it atop many Christmas goodies, and I added plenty of it to all the green smoothies we enjoy around our house.  And with all the healthy coconut recipes available on the Tropical Traditions website, I’ve got plenty more to try.  I can even mix some of the coconut with water in my blender to make my own coconut milk, which is great to have on hand for the various Indian recipes I like making.

It’s been a fun review process, but it’s not over yet!  Tropical Traditions would like to give one of you a 3.5-lb. container of shredded coconut to try, a $22.50 retail value.  If you’re a coconut lover, you’re really going to enjoy this giveaway.

Sale going on now:  Can’t wait to win it?  You can purchase tubs of the shredded, flaked or chipped coconut for 50% off through January 17, 2010!
