I said Thai or Ugandan jewelry giveaway, but this giveaway is much more than that. This one answers the question “What do you get for the person who has everything?” World Vision has put together a most unique gift catalog that allows you to donate in honor of friends and family members. Here’s how it works: Let’s say you’re perusing the catalog for a donation to make in honor of your sister who has everything, including a big heart. She loves to help others. So you discover that you can buy a goat for a family in a third world country, in honor of your sister. She’ll get a special card telling her what you did, and if you like, you can even send her a little stuffed goat as a symbol of the greater gift. Now everyone’s happy. You made life better for a family who needed it, your sister doesn’t have to return that sweater, and she feels great too because she knows what you did for someone else you did in her name.
What You Can Win: World Vision would like to offer a very special giveaway to a dkM reader. They’d like to give the winner $25 which can be used to purchase any of the following items from their donation catalog:
- $16 will buy two soccer or basketballs for a child
- $17 will buy improved hybrid or drought-resistant seeds for a nourishing harvest and income
- $18 will buy enough bed nets to protect an entire family from malaria
- $25 will provide $350 worth of school supplies in the U.S.
- $25 buys two chickens to provide a lasting source of nutrition and income for a family
The winner will not only get to choose how that $25 is spent, but they’ll also receive their choice of a Thai necklace or bracelet, or a Ugandan bracelet. What a fantastic prize this is! The true spirit of Christmas is definitely what this one’s all about.

One of the gifts we got/giving this year are micro loans–small amount loans for those in other countries to aid in setting up or helping their businesses. This is a bit similar. I hope that we can do good for someone. Through World Vision I would donate drought resistant hybrid seeds in honor of my in-laws who are ever-generous and good people.

Wow, so many wonderful things to choose from. I think that my favorite is donating 2 chickens. For such a little amount of money, you can give a family a decent nutitrious base. It’s humbling really.

So, I said earlier that we were doing micro loans for Christmas/Hanukkah this year and I just now noticed that there is a Microfinance section on World Vision’s site (we used Kiva.org). I love the idea of a $100 micro loan for a woman that World Vision has featured.
