What’s my son’s favorite DVD set these days? It’s the “Treasury of Classic Bedtime Stories” from Scholastic. Another great learning tool in our DVD library, these sleepy-time tales allow children ages 2 to 8 to enjoy watching animated versions of their favorite stories while the words appear on the bottom of the screen, giving smaller kids a head start on the concept of reading, while older kids can enjoy the ability to read along. (The read-along option does turn off if you’d prefer as well.)
This set has introduced my son to the wonders of Curious George, a favorite from many of our childhoods. Also included are Corduroy, Goodnight Gorilla, and my personal all-time favorite, Harold and the Purple Crayon. In all, this 4-DVD set includes 28 stories, many of them read by such familiar voices as Mia Farrow, James Earl Jones, and Lynn Whitfield, making it fun for the adults to watch with their kids. But I must admit, sitting down and enjoying snuggling with my son while having those old favorites read to the both of us is a pleasure all its own!
