I suppose many of us remember reading “Where the Wild Things Are” as a kid. I remember being – well, a little scared. Scared but fascinated with those snarling, growling creatures that a small boy managed to become king over, casting aside his initial fears to gain control of those things that go bump in the night. Scholastic Storybook Treasures has recently re-released “Where the Wild Things Are…and 5 More Stories by Maurice Sendak” in DVD form.
In case you haven’t heard yet (can’t imagine who’s let this news slip by), the full length feature film has recently been released in theaters everywhere. Directed by Spike Jones and written by a favorite author of mine, Dave Eggers, this fantastical movie is the catapult for Scholastic’s re-release of the popular storybook in DVD format. Also included in the DVD are “In the Night Kitchen”, and four Maurice Sendak stories sung by Carole King: “Alligators all Around”, “One was Johnny”, “Pierre”, and “Chicken Soup with Rice”.
So how did my 3-year-old son fare with his first viewing of “Where the Wild Things Are”? He was – a little scared. Like mother like son? I don’t think so. He kept wanting to watch it anyway, and since no child is eaten in the making of the film, wild thing rulership is finally established, and Max triumphantly learns his lesson and finds his dinner awaiting him, I was only too happy to pop the DVD back in. It’s currently his favorite Storybook Treasure DVD, and that’s saying a lot–he’s become quite a fan of the series, as have I.
