Congrats to winner Alyssa of Pennsylvania! Winner #2, we’re waiting to hear from you. So check that email!
We don’t have a Whole Foods in our neighborhood, but every summer for the past couple of years, we put a cooler in the back of the car and drive 136 miles to the nearest one. Then we make a day of it, eating our lunch there and picking out cool stuff to take back home. (Oh my gosh, I sound like a total health food nerd. Nice way to blow what little cover I had left.)
Now Whole Foods has a blog, Whole Story, and I’ve been having a lot of fun surfing it to get a Whole Foods fix between store visits. They share recipes, videos, information on getting chemicals out of your home, and a plethora of other tips. (I’ve been drooling over their video on how to make Homemade Greek-Style Veggie Burgers.)
In order to celebrate their new blog, Whole Foods has sent me some $25 Gift Cards for you, my healthy green readers. The rules are slightly different for this giveaway, and we’ll be giving out TWO cards! One winner will be chosen from Comments, and the other from the email subscriber list. So read on…
2 Ways to Enter, 2 Gift Cards to Win:
1.) Visit the Whole Story blog and look around a little. Come back here and leave a comment on this post, telling me something you learned on Whole Story. (While you’re over there, leave them a comment or two. It’s not required for the giveaway, but it sure would be a nice thing to do.)
2.) Subscribers are automatically entered into this and all future giveaways. Just click here: Subscribe to dkMommy Spot by Email (Please make sure to verify your Feedburner subscription by responding to the email they send you. If you don’t receive it, check your junk mail. Only verified subscriptions are entered for all the giveaways.)
Do both for two entries. Enter to win before midnight, July 14, 2008. Winners will be drawn randomly.
Note: Whole Foods is also offering a $25 gift card as part of the Gimme Recipes! Contest gift bundle!

I learned that the Maine Root Soda Company uses ethically sourced sugar from Paraguay in their sodas. In fact, They were the first soda company to use exclusively ethically-certified sugar.
It’s amazing reading about the tomato scare – I’m trying to grow more at my house now
Could be tomatoes, could be red peppers, could be both. Time for our government to actually consider our food source as important, not bacteria-proof nor terrorist-proof, with rapid wide spread effects when salmonella is involved. We’re growing our own vegetables this year, in the middle of another drought or buying fresh vegetables from other growers we know. Sadly, buying fresh fruit and vegetables at the local grocery store permits too much risk to enter our home.
Like Kevin mentioned yesterday, this site is very informative! I’m pleasantly surprised that a grocer values education. I appreciate the articles that are not geared towards advertisement; they are simply informing us of the need to think a little more green (light bulbs).
We have to be careful what we buy for food with all these scares.
I love grocery shopping at Whole Foods. On the Whole Story blog I was pleased to learn about Laughing Giraffe Organics and the raw, vegan, organic, gluten-free granola and macaroons that they make. As I’m allergic to eggs and dairy, these sound like great new treats to try.
I learned about contamination issues for red peppers — yikes!
I love red peppers
We’re growing more vegetables this summer
The red pepper scare is very interesting.
I read about the pepper and tomato scare! I shop at whole foods alot becouse I know I am getting organic and close to home grown foods, drinks, eco-friendly make-up, and Eco-friendly soaps. They prepare their own foods too for quick and easy on the go meals! I read they blog offer loans to local growers and to small companies!!! Their 365 foods are sooo good and reading on them make you feel so confident on their services at whole foods! Also, the Real Deal section is so cool we can actually express our thoughts and give tips as a customer! ~Thank you whole foods!!

They are the world’s largest natural and organic grocer
Love their blog and podcasts! I think they’re fascinating!!! Well, it looks like another concern….from Tomatos to NOW Peppers!

its so interesting that we have not heard about pepper contamination! thank you Whole Story!
I learned why it’s difficult for Whole Foods to offer recycling services for compact fluorescent bulbs. Because they sell so much food (yummy food!) and the bulbs are considered hazardous, as of now they’re not offering recycling services. Glad they addressed the issue. It really made me think even more highly of them.
I didn’t realize those peppers were part of the problem.
Lots of interesting articles there – the info on the red pepper contamination, maine root soda company, and the fact that it is difficult to safely dispose of the clf light bulbs.
I’ve learned that the FDA must be quite understaff – this tomato issue is not clear cut. Why
doesn’t the FDA let us know if the products in questions Peppers, Tomatoes are conventional, organic or both? Why are we not told the country of orgin. Whole Food is making sure their
customers are aware of the outbreak of illness and the suspected product(s) involved.
Wow! Thanks for the information.
I didn’t realize that compact fluorescent lightbulbs would save so much on an electric bill. Thanks!
Oh, I love Whole Foods! We don’t have one in town but I love shopping there when I visit my sister. I had NO idea that the tomato recall had spread to peppers. Did I miss that on the news? Good to know!
I love all this great info – can’t wait to try the recipes -Maine Root Beer – I will get some from Whole Foods. Wish I didn’t have to travel so far to get there.
I did not know there was such a place as whole foods but I am very excited to try it out. I visited their site and I really enjoyed it.
I watched the video about the strawberries that are grown through biodynamics – very interesting! I love Whole Foods, wish I could afford to shop there every week. There produce is always wonderful.

I like the Real Deal Value tips – very informative…thanks!

The red pepper scare is new to me
I am always looking for foods that are organically grown and pesticide free.
I had no idea that the “green” lightbulbs had mecury in them – and I was excited to hear that home depot will have drop boxes for them once they do burn out.

I learned that Home Depot and Ikea have recycling dropoff for CFL light bulbs. That’s good to know.
I learned how to dispose of the new CFL bulbs. Up until this point, I wasn’t sure what you were supposed to do with them. I hope that more places will be able to recycle them by the time our first ones start burning out.
I love that they give out loans to small producers.

I learned all about Garlic and its many benefits; Garlic (Allium sativum) has been used as a food, spice, and medicine for centuries. Today, garlic is one of the most popular herbal remedies. It is used for maintaining general health and for treating hypercholesterolemia (high blood cholesterol), heart disease, and infections. Garlic has been investigated in many clinical trials and the body of evidence continues to grow. The purpose of this literature review was to update the clinical trials and assess the known health effects of garlic.
The homemade Greek style veggie burger recipe and video was awesome! I love finding new recipes and watching someone else do the recipe step by step was very helpful! I am lucky enough to have two Whole Foods within 20 minutes of my house.
That’s some dedication driving that far to a Whole Foods! We’re fortunate that we have one within walking distance of merely less than a mile away.
The article on disposing of CFL lightbulbs was appreciated and I am glad they included that link to Earth911.org on how to recycle some items. I also appreciated its suggestion on how to clean up one of the CFL lightbulbs should it happen to break.
thanks.

I had no idea about the red pepper scare. I also read about the Texas drought. My in-laws live there and I know it has been horrible. Thanks for the giveaway and the website!

I was just reading The Real Deal and enjoying all the comments people made about how they make their grocery budget go farther, allowing them to buy more at Whole Foods Market or wherever they shop. I sometimes complain that I’m not able to afford so much of what is sold at places like WFM, but maybe I could use some of those tips to better help me out!
I learned a lot from the podcast about corn. I never knew the differences between the different types.
